Isn’t the shower a great place to reflect on life sometimes? There must be something about those steamy vapors that jump starts my brain. Unless it’s a cold shower, then there are no vapors… just goosebumps.
Tonight I was thinking in the shower about my life, my perception of ministry and my faith over the last 6 months or so. About 6 months ago I was fascinated by the book of Genesis (prior to the flood), the book of Daniel and the book of Revelation. There is nothing wrong with these parts of the Bible, in fact, these parts are just oozing with prophetic goodness. They are very deep and even the most advance theologians still can’t comprehend the depths of these passages. I was really into all of it, so much so, that I would listen to Podcasts from my favorite watchman and fellow apocalyptic researchers for hours while at work, day after day. It got to the point that I was so busy looking for the anti-christ and the end of the world that I forgot about all the work that needs to be done around me.
Joh 4:33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?
Joh 4:34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
Joh 4:35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
Joh 4:36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
Joh 4:37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
Joh 4:38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours. (KJV)
I’m not sure exactly when my shift in perception came, but it was probably about 2-3 months ago. Since then, I started up the men’s Bible study again for the year and my wife and I started a group for young people at church. The purpose of the group is to start teaching the young people about practical ministry and how to apply it for evangelism. I suppose between all of those changes and me getting more into my Bible, I have realized that there are many people all around me every day that need me to show them Jesus. It is hard to show the love of Jesus when you are lost in news articles and Podcasts about the end of days and dreaming about some Christian version of Mad Max. I realized that I need to focus on the here and now.
Mat. 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (NIV)
Don’t get me wrong, I do believe we are in the last days and world events will keep getting crazier and crazier, but I want others to see Christ in me. I want to be his hands and feet. After all…
Luke 10:12 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. (NIV)
